By Julia Cho
Directed by Chay Yew
When Boo-Seng Lee is laid off from the job to which he has devoted the last 25 years of his life, he decides to take his two sons Jimmy and Isaac on a road trip to Durango, Colorado. As they make their way across the Arizona desert, they confront family secrets, peeling back the layers of identity, alienation and duty that define being Asian in America.

very important poetry contest
GotPoetry is seeking submissions for a chapbook length book of poetry about violence, survival and hope. The book, Beth's Legacy, will be published in memory of Elizabeth Spence Cann of Norton, MA, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend, and all proceeds will benefit Brittney and Danielle Cann, her daughters, who were critically injured in the attack that killed their mother.
Beth's Legacy
On the morning of August 27, 2007, Elizabeth Spence Cann was found shot to death in her own bed. Two of her daughters, 12 year old Brittney and 15 year old Danielle, were found on the floor of the hallway leading into her room. Both girls had been shot in the head and left for dead. The shooter, Beth's estranged boyfriend, took his own life early that morning.By some miracle, both Danielle and Brittney survived the senseless attack, but both face a long, long road to recovery. A third daughter, their oldest sister Amanda, was not home at the time. She faces a future of questions and grief. The girls are a part of Gotpoetry's extended family.
Beth was the niece of Gotpoetry staffer Deb Powers, and deeply loved cousin of regular member and contributor Cara Powers. In the week that followed the shooting, the Gotpoetry community reacted to the news with an outpouring of sympathy, love and support for which the family is extremely grateful. Many also privately asked if there was something more, something tangible, that they could do to show their support for the family and the injured girls. There is.
Gotpoetry is seeking submissions of poetry for a chapbook length anthology to be called "Beth's Legacy". We're especially seeking poems that speak to surviving loss, recovering from violence and ending domestic abuse. There is no restriction on form or length. All styles of poetry are welcome, though poems of less than 60 lines will be more likely to be accepted. The selection committee for Beth's Legacy will include the staff of Gotpoetry and representatives of Beth Cann's family.
The finished book will be available for purchase through Gotpoetry and a variety of other outlets, with all proceeds from the sale contributed to the Cann Family Hope Fund set up for the support and aid of Brittney and Danielle by Beth's church in Norton, MA.
Deadline for submissions is September 30, 2007.
Submit up to three poems for consideration in the body of an email to :bethslegacy@onlythebest.info by September 30.
Please submit only original poetry to which you hold the copyright.Because the book is a fund raiser, we can not pay for the poems accepted, but we will make the book available for download to any poet whose work appears in Beth's Legacy. Your submission to Beth's Legacy grants to us one-time print publication rights to your submitted work. You retain all other rights to your work.
If you would like to make a donation directly to the fund, you can do that by sending your donation to:

dear abby letter part three
You've done your "problem" letter and your Dear Abby "response" letter. Now it's time to write your "follow-up" letter. This will let you know how things ended up for your character.
DAILY CREATIVITY EXERCISE:
Reread the Dear Abby response letter. Take a moment to visualize your character taking her advice. How would his/her life change? How would their behaviour change?
Now, give yourself 10 minutes to write a "follow-up" letter in the voice of your character to Dear Abby. Pretend that six months has passed and you're writing to thank her for the advice and tell her what happened in these last months with the changes you made - the changes she suggested. What were the results? How did other people respond to these changes?
Write for the full 10 minutes. Don't stop - just let your hand keep moving across the page. See what happens.

dear abby letter part two
Okay, so you've got your "problem letter" all written and you've either handed it off to someone else or you haven't looked at it for a day. Now it's time to write the "solution letter" in response.
DAILY CREATIVITY EXERCISE:
Write 10 helpful statements on slips of paper. The statements should be directive, one sentence and can be as specific or vague as you care to be. They can be sincere or they can be cheeky. Don't censor yourself
A fun way to do this is to pick any self-help book and pull sentences randomly. You should feel free to use any of these as well:
Sleep on it.
Take a good look at yourself in the mirror.
Pick the path of least resistance.
Go ahead and wallow in your pity.
The early bird may catch the worm, but who wants to eat worms?
I suggest you pray for forgiveness.
Take the slips of paper with the solutions written on them, fold them over, throw them in a bowl or a hat and shake them up.
Randomly pull two slips. Don't look at them yet. Reread your problem letter now.
Using the two "solutions" give yourself 10 minutes to write the response letter. You must use both solutions and you must write for the full 10 minutes. Make references back to the original letter, give examples of how your solution would work, be as specific or sincere as you care to be.
CHECK IN TOMORROW TO SEE PART THREE OF THIS EXERCISE.

fake dear abby letters for character development
Hello Daily Creators -
Last week, in our Creativity Ladies group, we wrote fake Dear Abby letters that turned out to be quite helpful in quickly discovering a great deal about a new character and their six month dramatic arc.
I'd like to pass this exercise on - which we did in fun only to find out, it was a fast and extremely productive way of finding out a lot of backstory and projecting an ending.
DAILY CREATIVE EXERCISE:
Brainstorm a list of 10 "problems" - keep them to one sentence and write them in the first person. Write them on slips of paper.
If you're working in a group, have everyone come up with 2 problems each and do the same thing.
An example of a problem might be:
My boyfriend left me for his ex-wife.
My cat hates me.
I can't seem to get out of bed in the mornings.
My mother-in-law judges my cooking.
My sister and I haven't spoken in four years.
Keep it very simple. Fold the slips of paper so you can't see the writing and put them in a basket or a hat. Shake them up and pull out one slip.
Give yourself ten minutes to quickly write a Dear Abby letter based on that problem. Make sure to write in the first person and come up with a catchy name at the end to sign off like: Dumped in Detroit or Sad About Sister.
Try to be very specific about how the problem effects your life - who else is involved and why you need help. Don't worry about keeping it "newspaper short" - write for the full ten minutes. Tell how the problem first started, what you do to try to fix it and why Abby is the only person you can talk to about it - have you tried talking to anyone else? Who and what happened?
When you're done with the letter - fold it over, address it to Dear Abby and put it away for the day.
If you're writing with a group - give the letter to someone else in the group.
