vote to help a dance company

Dear fellow NYU Alum, friends and advocates for the performing arts,

I hope you are well. I wanted to let you know about a new series of free web tools that we are developing to serve the performing arts and to ask for your help in getting the word out about an opportunity that we have to win $10,000 to help us create them. The contest runs for all of December, but the votes between now and Dec 7th are the most important so if you can help spread the word in the next few days that would be especially appreciated. I hope you will vote too!

Thank you for your consideration. I send my best wishes!

--Chris Elam, Misnomer Dance Theater, NYU Tisch MFA graduate 2001

In addition to creating dances, Misnomer Dance Theater has put together a proposal to build online tools for the dance world. Please take two minutes to vote for us on IdeaBlob to win $10,000 toward building these tools to share with dance and theater artists to help them increase bookings and revenue and give online audiences more engaging experiences. The web has created new opportunities for artists and we are asking you to help enable us to build these resources for the arts. This first round of voting ends December 7th, so we need you to support our idea on IdeaBlob today! With your vote and this $10k, we'll be creating exciting ways for people to discover arts online!

Vote here:
http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/906-Impact-the-arts-Enable-perform

What will Misnomer do if we win $10,000 for this idea?Your vote will help us:

1) BUILD web-streaming capabilities for rehearsals enabling audiences to "attend" live rehearsals online and interact directly with artists.

2) CREATE an online theater in which visitors can watch and direct performances from multiple perspectives including back stage views, and performers' point of view via body mounted cameras.

3) DEVELOP tools to request and display the geography of artist's online audiences. Venues in new cities can then have ready-made audience bases.

We hope these online tools will help transform artist's websites into sites of participation. We anticipate this will create great impact in the arts world!
VOTE FOR US on IdeaBlob (reg req'd)!

Or, heck, register your own idea!

grant for native american artists

National Museum of the American Indian Accepting Applications Visual and Expressive Arts Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2008

The National Museum of the American Indian ( http://nmai.si.edu/ ) Visual and Expressive Arts Grants program offers support to a wide range of arts activities with the goal of increasing the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary Native American arts. NMAI considers the recognition of living artists of the Western Hemisphere to be of primary importance and will direct support to projects that strengthen the scholarship in this underserved field and create opportunities for new and innovative work.

Applications are accepted in two program areas:

1) The Visual Arts Program provides funding in two areas: Ex- hibitions and Installations -- funding of exhibitions and/or installations (including installation art) of contemporary Native American art in the United States at not-for-profit venues; and Publications and Critical Writing -- funding of publications on contemporary Native art, including, but not limited to, exhibition catalogs, special editions of journals, etc. At least 50 percent of the proposed project artists/au- thors/curators must be Native American.

The amount of each award will be $7,500 to $15,000 per project. Grants will be awarded to nonprofit or education-based organizations such as community art centers, artist-run galleries, museums, arts organizations, and college or university galleries or museums.

2) The Expressive Arts Program provides funding to promote the creation and presentation of new works (or existing but never- before-performed works) by Native artists, with particular empha- sis on collaboration. Applications from two or more artists who wish to collaborate are strongly encouraged. Artists may create presentations that include (but are not limited to) music, dance, spoken word, electronic media, film/video, costume design, mask making, set design, performance art, photography, painting, and other forms of expressive culture.

Grants of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to selected artists. This call is open to all indigenous peoples who hold American citizenship. Tribal affili- ations are not required for non-Native collaborators, although the primary applying artist must be Native.

Complete program information is available at the NMAI Web site. RFP Link: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10009978/nmai

story fund grant in ca

California Council for the Humanities Announces Guidelines for Story Fund
Deadline: February 4, 2008

The California Story Fund is an ongoing grant program of the California Council for the Humanities ( http://www.calhum.org/ ). The council will award competitive grants to public humanities programs that bring to light compelling stories from California's diverse communities and provide opportunities for collective reflection and public discussion.

The Story Fund is intended to encourage Californians from many communities to share their stories, thus promoting greater understanding and appreciation of the richness and complexity of the state. The council is especially interested in projects that will engage California youth in interpreting and reflecting on their experience through humanities-based programming. Organizations serving youth are strongly encouraged to apply.

Projects should use grant funds to identify or collect stories from community members, present and communicate the stories to the general public, and foster public discussion of the meaning and significance of the stories. One or more of the following formats may be used to present and communicate these stories: photography and interpretive exhibit; radio documentary; digital media; dramatic presentation; inter- pretive artwork; poetry readings; storytelling events; film festivals; and community conferences. Other formats may also be eligible.

Projects must host a face-to-face community discussion component that engages people in discussion of the stories and their relevance to the community, and must involve at least one humanities expert (in addition to the project director) in the design and implementation of the project.

Program guidelines and descriptions of previously funded CSF projects are available at the CCH Web site. The online application will be available on the Web site beginning January 2, 2008. RFP Link: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10009977/calhum

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Accepting Applications For Manhattan Community Arts Fund Grants
Deadline: January 22, 2008

The Manhattan Community Arts Fund, an initiative of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council ( http://lmcc.net/grants/boroughwide/manncommartfund/index.html ), supports local arts organizations and artists that have little access to other government funding sources by providing small grants to local artists and arts projects serving the Manhattan community. Funds are intended to enable grant recipients to eventually leverage financial support from other sectors and to prepare applicants for the process of obtaining public funds. Through the fund, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council will award a total of approximately $125,000 this cycle, with grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 each to individual artists or nonprofit organizations.

Last year, 69 grants were awarded. Applications will be accepted from Manhattan-based individual artists or nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits such as arts organizations, social service agencies, senior centers, faith- based organizations, folk societies, and cultural centers are eligible. However, they must have proof of nonprofit status and their projects must be implemented in Manhattan. Similarly, individual artists must live in Manhattan.

Applications may be submitted for ongoing or new projects in any discipline for which activities will take place between April 1, 2008, and December 31, 2008. Proposals may only be submitted by applicants who have not applied by the September 18, 2007, appli- cation deadline. In addition, first-time applicants are required to attend program information sessions.

Visit the LMCC Web site for complete program details, eligibility restrictions, and dates and locations of information sessions.

Deadline: Various

The NAMM Foundation ( http://www.nammfoundation.org/ ), a non- profit organization dedicated to advancing active participation in music making by people of all ages, has announced its 2008 Request for Proposals initiative.

The foundation is accepting proposals for the following five initiatives:

Disney's High School Musical: The Music in You Grant Program will award ten public middle and high schools a grant of $5,000 each and license to put on their own school stage production of Disney's "High School Musical." (Deadline: November 30, 2007.)

The Sounds of Living: The Impact of Music Making initiative will support research that examines the role of active participation in music for children, youth, adults, and seniors. Research funded under the initiative explores the effects of music learning and music making outside of formal educational settings and ex- pands the understanding of the role of music making in health, wellness, socialization, and the inter-connections between mind, body, and spirit that contribute to wellness and overall quality of life. (Deadline: January 2, 2008.)

cause & effect - plot exercise

I admit it, I'm swamped and as a result, I totally stink about keeping the Creativity exercises coming. I hope everyone can forgive me. The book is due mid-December and I promise, after that, I'll be a good little blogger.

Today, though, I do have a writing exercise for you. One to help with plot.

DAILY CREATIVITY EXERCISE:

Tear a sheet of paper into 12 even slips. On four of those slips, write the name of your character and an action they are taking such as:

Elizabeth tore up the envelope.
Elizabeth dumped her purse onto the bed.
Elizabeth answered the phone.
Elizabeth shot her sister.

They can be small actions. They can be grand actions. You can do four slips for the same character or you can mix it up and choose four different characters from the same piece.

THESE ARE YOUR "CAUSE" SLIPS. Set them aside.

Now, create your "EFFECT" slips. Take your remaining 8 slips of paper and write on them general things that happened. Don't include a character name. This is a general statement of something that happened such as:

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, flooding her childhood home.
The Bible was lost in the move.
The dinner was a disaster.
Her neighbor knocked on the door asking for milk.
Everything fell apart.
The toilet overflowed.
They reunited.
The camera stopped taking pictures.

Very, very general statements such as these. You can even flip through random books to pull sentences so you're not thinking too much.

Put your Cause slips in a bowl and your Effect slips in a bowl. Pick one from each.

Write for ten minutes and explain how your Characters Action in the Cause slip resulted in What Happened from your Effect slip.

Do this four times. Give yourself 10 minutes for each Cause/Effect. See what you learn.

With the holidays coming up, check out Daily Creator Sarah Avery's SAVERY line of handmade purses and dolls. Here's her official blurb:
Each Savery for delicious living is a handmade, one of a kind expression. There are no patterns, no forms, no reproductions. Truly. I design, crochet, stitch, assemble, name and label each bag in my Burbank home. A one-woman operation, there are no sweatshops; no farmed out assembly. I create each bag with my own two hands. Once completed, each bag is given a woman’s name. Perhaps the name of a woman who has inspired, moved, loved, encouraged, or impressed me; perhaps simply a name that suits my feeling about the bag. You will find the name of your Savery original stitched in the lining. These bags are more than an accessory. They’re personality, comfort, attitude, style. Independent Television Service Announces International Call
Deadline: February 1, 2008

The Independent Television Service ( http://www.itvs.org/ ) International Call enables independent producers from outside of the United States to create documentaries for U.S. tele- vision. The ITVS International Call seeks programs that bring international perspectives, ideas, events, and people to U.S. television; content that represents diverse communities and advances underrepresented points of view; content that explores globally significant themes and inspires public dialogue; single documentaries of standard broadcast-hour length; programs that have already begun production and can be realistically completed within one year of contract; and co-production projects with either international broadcast partner(s) or co-productions with producers from different countries.

Applicants must be "independent producers" who have artistic, budgetary, and editorial control of their project and the ability to grant ITVS the right to reversion for broadcast. The primary applicant must be a citizen of another country who does not reside in the U.S. Dual foreign/U.S. citizens are eligible if they do not reside in the U.S. American citizens may only participate as co-applicants in a co-production relationship with a non-U.S. primary applicant.

Applicants must have previous film or television production experience in a principal role (producer, co-producer, director or co-director). Students are not eligible. U.S. residents, regardless of citizenship, are not eligible to apply as a primary applicant. International Call funds must be used as production completion funds for the project. The range of production funds offered for each project will vary.

Pew Fellowships in the Arts Program Offers Support for Philadelphia-Area Artists
Deadline:
December 10, 2007 (Playwriting);
January 7, 2008 (Folk & Traditional Arts and Painting)

Pew Fellowships in the Arts ( http://www.pewarts.org/ ), a program of the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage ( http://www.pcah.us/ ) established by the Pew Charitable Trusts ( http://www.pewtrusts.org/ ), awards grants to artists working in a wide variety of performing, visual, and literary disciplines. The grants provide financial support directly to the artists so that they may have the opportunity to dedicate themselves to creative pursuits exclusively. PFA makes awards to artists working in twelve different discipline categories, which rotate on a four-year cycle.

In 2008, applications are being accepted in the areas of folk & traditional arts, painting, and playwriting. Fellowships may be awarded to artists at any stage of their career development, from early to mature, and to artists work- ing in a wide range of aesthetics and traditions. Fellowship recipients are determined according to two primary criteria. First, and most important, applicants are judged on their artistic accomplishment and future promise. Second, panelists consider the impact that a fellowship will have on the applicant's career and artistic development.

Applicants must be practicing artists of demonstrated commitment and professional accomplishment, and must have resided in the five-county Philadelphia area (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery) for at least two continuous years at the time of application. Up to twelve fellowships are awarded annually. As of the 2008 award cycle, the fellowship amount has increased to $60,000 from $50,000.

request a tree in nyc

You can request that the Parks Department plant a tree on your street by following this link:
www.nyc.gov/portal/site/nycgov/menuitem.a57f189830ce7553e333cd5701c789a0/index.jsp?subView =request_street_tree

As the Parks Department begins implementing Million Trees NYC, the agency is introducing a more systematic approach to tree planting on streets, parks and other public lands by targeting specific NYC neighborhoods. Neighborhoods are being selected for tree planting activities based upon high prevalence of asthma among residents coupled with cumulative tree planting opportunities identified by the 2006 Tree Census sponsored by the Parks Department. By focusing public resources on targeted neighborhoods, communities will experience a more dramatic change in their urban landscape-at the same time, public resources will be utilized more effectively and efficiently. In tandem with the agency's neighborhood tree planting strategy, the Parks Department will continue to fulfill individual street tree requests.

In order to have your street tree request considered for the spring planting season (March-May), your request must be received no later than December 1st. To have your street tree request considered for the fall planting season (October-December), your request must be received by July 1st. Due to timing and the number of request the Parks Department receives, your request may take longer that expected. Please be aware that underground utilities, low electrical wires, light posts and building entrances may prevent the Parks Department from being able to fulfill street tree requests. The Parks Department will let you know if your site is unsuitable for planting.New York City home and land owners also have the ability to plant a street tree by obtaining a Tree Planting Permit from the Parks Department and hiring a landscape contractor to plant an approved street tree.

To request a free permit to plant a street tree in front of your home or business, call 311.For one-stop street tree permitting and, planting the New York Tree Trust can assist in site and species selection, permitting and the planting process. For more details, contact the New York Tree Trust at 212-360-TREE.

a thought about not thinking

THANKS TO DAILY CREATOR L.P. WHO SENDS US THIS REMINDER:

A . . . great distraction at times are so-called "running commentary" thoughts such as, "Now I am not thinking of anything," "Things are going very well now," "This is dreadful; my mind just won't stay still" and the like . . . . All such thoughts should simply be noted as "Thinking," and, as Huang Po says, just "dropped like a piece of rotten wood." "Dropped," notice, not thrown down.

A piece of rotten wood is not doing anything to irritate you, but is just of no use, so there is no point in hanging on to it. . . . Nor is there any need to try to retrace the links in a chain of associated thoughts, nor to try to ascertain what it was that first started the chain. Any such impulse should itself be noted simply as "Thinking," and the mind should revert to the breathing. However badly things have just been going, one should take up again at the only place one can--where one is--and go on from there.

feng shui your creative space

We've been talking about ways to separate the Artist Hustle from your actual Creativity in your creative space. For those of you who would like to take it to another level, how about trying the principles of Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese science of interior design developed to balance the energies in our living environment to assure health, love, wealth and good fortune.

TODAY'S CREATIVITY CHALLENGE:

Visit Stephanie McWilliams' website http://evolvingarts.com/ and her site on HGTV.com http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hshui to learn more about Feng Shui and to determine if any of her tips or advice is applicable to your current creative space.

Thinking about painting your walls? Find the color that will bring financial success to your career. Need a boost of inspiration? Maybe the placement of your furniture is blocking the flow of energy through your space.

Open your mind, open up your room and see what happens.

October 20, 2007

your creative space

I've been thinking about the separation of creativity from the work it takes to be creative. By this I mean, we artists spend a tremendous amount of time filling out grant applications, hustling to get our work seen, sending out resumes or samples of our work, schmoozing at events so we can meet the "deciders" of our fate, going on auditions, trying to lock down an agent or manager, applying for residency programs, etc.

And then, add on top of that that a big percentage of us still have to have a "safety job" as I like to call them - a job that might be completely unrelated to our creative work and where do you find the time to actually CREATE???

TODAY'S CREATIVITY CHALLENGE:

Look at your current creativity space. How much of the space is devoted to pure creativity and how much is devoted to "the hustle" of being an artist?

Do you have bills, applications, gym schedules, your "to-do" list, headshots, resumes, etc. stacked on top of that script you're trying to finish, that painting you just sketched out, that table that's supposed to be for collaging, designing, dreaming?

Do you have files of your past taxes, your car repair log, your press clippings hanging alongside your inspiration file, your notes on a character, your dream file? Do you even have a dream file???? A file that holds images of things you hope to one day do, see, be, own or create. Get one!

Is there a way to create a division between the two sides of your business as an artist?

Because we have two major goals: Create and Give The Creation To The World. That's it. That's all we're supposed to be doing.

Of course, we also have to eat and pay the rent so...we apply for grants, we fax press releases, we do the Artist Hustle.

Can we atleast use our physical surroundings to separate the two? Separate the Creative from the Hustle?

Look at your space. It can be a physical, visual, spiritual, mental separation - whatever works for you.

Shubert Foundation Offers Funding for U.S. Professional Theaters

Deadline: December 3, 2007

The Shubert Foundation ( http://www.shubertfoundation.org/ ) annually awards unrestricted grants for general operating support to not-for-profit, professional resident theaters in the United States. Shubert Foundation grants are awarded exclusively to U.S. organi- zations, which must have current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The foundation provides grants only to organizations that have an established artistic and administrative track record, as well as a history of fiscal responsibility. Grants are awarded based on an assessment of each organization's operation and its contribution to the field. Artistic achieve- ment, administrative strength, and fiscal stability are factored into each evaluation, as is the company's development of new work and other significant contributions to the field of professional theater in the U.S. Criteria for children's theater correspond to those for theater companies.

The foundation does not make grants to individuals, nor does it provide funds for project support, audience development, direct subsidy of reduced-price admissions, conduit organizations, renovation projects, loans, or capital or endowment campaigns. your creative space

Visually and energetically, what are the things in your creative space offering to you? Is your space cramped - is it dark - is it bright with light or is it overflowing with books? You've already taken a visual inventory of your space. Now it's time to make some changes.

TODAY'S CREATIVITY EXERCISE:

Clean up your work space. Clean the windows. Sweep the floors. Throw away the old piles of magazines or organize them for upcoming projects. Throw out pens that no longer write, books you never read and never wanted to, that basket of recycling that's just been sitting there.

Take one day to shake it up.

Change the photos that surround you. Change the art on the walls. Rearrange the furniture. Move the phone out of the room. Open the window or if you don't have a window, paint one on your wall.

Is there a way to separate your business work from your creative work? Can you do that visually or physically in your work space? Two different shelves? Two different filing cabinets? Split your bulletin board down the middle?

What do you really need? What can you let go?

today's creativity exercise

Think about the space where you create.

Is it full of books? Cramped and dark? Beautiful and well-organized? Inspiring? Draining? Quiet? Busy? Do you have a comfortable chair, adequate room to move, storage, supplies handy?

Maybe you prefer to work in public? Write in a cafe? Dance in a studio? Paint in a class or a residency program?

Maybe you don't have a designated area where you work.

Maybe it's time to create one.

TODAY'S CREATIVITY EXERCISE:

Look around the space where you create - what can you change about it to make it more conducive to your creative process? What would you like to change? What do you wish you had?

If you don't have a space, think about what your ideal space would be - write it down, sketch it out, start asking people for it.

You don't have to make the changes today - just observe and think about what you would like to do.

check out the mantra trailer

The Mantra Trailer

Created out of a 1950’s camper, the Mantra Trailer invites people to chant, their mantras, prayers, creeds, aspirations and petitions for the transformation of self and society.

The interior of the trailer is a traveling meditation space and recording studio. It is a trance inducing, contemplative space, oriented toward the internal. The exterior serves as a vehicle for mysterious aural broadcast and visual presentation of the people’s mantras. The sides of the trailer host a changeable marquis, reminiscent of the church signboard. Mundane, playful and even bizarre personal mantras may take on unforeseen spiritual, cultural or political content to those who witness them. The exterior is equipped with a holosonic speaker that continuously broadcasts a mix of recorded mantras, which can only be heard within the focused range of the speaker’s path.

By-passers drawn to the Mantra Trailer are invited inside one at a time to voice and record their mantras in privacy. Meanwhile face-to-face dialogue occurs outside the trailer as people wait their turn.

What is a mantra?

The Sanskrit word mantra consists of the root man, “to think" (also in manas "mind") and the suffix -tra meaning, "tool", hence a literal translation would be "instrument of thought" or “mind tool”.

In eastern spiritual traditions a mantra is a sacred word, chant or sound that is repeated during mediation to facilitate the transformation of consciousness. In mass media a mantra is an expression or idea that is repeated, often without thinking about it, as a way of defining, simplifying and controlling complex realities. Consider how the Bush administration’s three word mantra, WAR ON TERROR, has undermined America. In pop culture the role of the personal mantra has gained significantly as an effective tool for centering, managing and self-actualization in a perpetually transitional world.

Record a mantra for this project.

At the intersection of imagination, evangelism and propaganda...

Walter Brueggemann, a contemporary Christian theologian describes evangelism as “an activity of transformed consciousness that results in an altered perception of world, neighbor and self, and an authorization to live differently in that world.” In his book The Prophetic Imagination he postulates, "The task of the prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us."

This is also the task of community engagement projects such as Learning-To-Love-You-More. Likewise, the Mantra Trailer provides an interface for the human voice within the enculturation of consumerism and globalization. It achieves this through an indigenous path, rooted in southern, American, bible-belt culture and the “new age.” Peddling a homeopathic remedy for the mass media slogans of the day, the Mantra Trailer focuses attention on the personal and spiritual mantras people live by, one neighborhood and voice at a time.

The Mantra Trailer deals with the terrain of landscape, globalization and isolation through the scale of the body. The physical trailer mirrors the body’s process of manifestation. It has an interior space for recording, meditation and authorship and an exterior place of broadcast, presentation, and dialogue. As voice and language pass through the operation of the trailer, the private monologue surprisingly reveals itself as social discourse.
