American Council of Learned Societies Announces Guidelines for Digital Innovation Fellowships

With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies is inviting applications for the sixth annual ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships. The program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences.

ACLS Digital Innovation Fellowships are intended to support an academic year dedicated to working on a major scholarly project that takes a digital form. Projects may involve development of new digital tools that further humanistic research (such as digital research archives or innovative databases), research that depends on or is greatly enhanced by the use of such tools, the representation of such research, or some combination of these features.

ACLS will award up to six Digital Innovation Fellowships this year, including one project involving the collaboration of two scholars. Each fellowship carries a stipend of up to $60,000 toward an academic year's leave and provides for project costs of up to $25,000. ACLS does not support creative works (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translations, or purely pedagogical projects.

The program is open to scholars in all fields of the humanities and the humanistic social sciences. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree conferred prior to the application deadline. (An established scholar who can demonstrate the equivalent of the Ph.D. in publications and professional experience may also qualify.) U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required.

1) National Endowment for the Arts Announces Guidelines for American Masterpieces: Dance
Deadline: October 24, 2008

American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius (http://nea.gov/national/masterpieces/index.html) is a major initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts ( http://www.arts.gov) to acquaint Americans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy.

Through the initiative, reconstructions and restagings of significant dance works of the highest quality will be experienced by Americans in communities across the nation. The endowment
plans to support a variety of projects that are artistically, historically, and culturally significant and that reflect the breadth of dance forms, styles, and techniques in America.

Grants will be awarded in two areas: 1) for the reconstruction or restaging of significant American dance works and their performance at home and on tour by dance companies, presenters, and festivals; and 2) to college and university dance programs for the restaging, performance, and documentation of significant dance choreography in order to provide dance students with access to the legacy of American dance history.

All projects must be accompanied by related educational, interpretive, or contextual components. Substantial efforts should be made to engage and expand dance audiences by reaching underserved communities.

For dance companies, presenters, and festivals, grants will range from $15,000 to $150,000 each. For college and university dance programs, all grants will be for $15,000 each. All grants require a nonfederal match of at least 1 to 1. A grant period of up to two years is allowed.

Eligible applicants include nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3), U.S. organizations; units of state or local government; or federally recognized tribal communities or tribes.

Program guidelines are available at the NEA Web site.

2) Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Releases Guidelines for Artists & Communities Program
Deadline: December 1, 2008

The Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation ( http://midatlanticarts.org) has announced program guidelines for the 2009-10 cycle of its Artists & Communities program. This year, artists from any of the foundation's nine partner states are eligible to participate.

Artists & Communities supports artist residencies designed collaboratively by visiting artists and host nonprofit organizations that engage the public in the creative process. Artists and non-
profit organizations from Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, and West Virginia are eligible to participate
in the program.

Artists & Communities supports professional creative artists (choreographers, composers, poets, writers, filmmakers, media, and visual artists of all kinds) who partner with nonprofit
organizations on projects that result in the creation of new work. The program is specifically designed to support artists whose work is informed by or developed in conjunction with
community participation. Nonprofit organizations apply in partnership with the artist(s)
they wish to host. The project must be designed collaboratively by the artist and the host organization. The host organization must be a tax-exempt nonprofit corporation or a unit of government.

Artists & Communities grants usually range from $5,000 to $20,000 each and must be matched on a 1:1 basis. Grants funds may only be used toward the artist's stipend, long-distance travel and accommodations, supplies and materials used in the project, and documentation.

a new website launching

I am very excited to share with you the announcement of our new business - CITY BEAUTY GUIDE. While the information below will introduce you to the concept, this first phase of the business is the most critical and I want to personally ask for your help to get the email circulating. Please click the link below, take the survey (it's quick and easy) and submit your reviews for the beauty or grooming services you do. Please then forward the email below to your friends, family and business associates and ask them to do the same. Remember your Facebook and LinkedIn networks too! Your contribution will help us build a robust database of salon and spa reviews before we launch the fully searchable CITY BEAUTY GUIDE website. Thank you for your time and support. I know you both have such a great network of friends and contacts and hope that you will forward this and ask them to do the survey and spread the word!

xo Julie

We are very excited to introduce you to CITY BEAUTY GUIDE, our new business venture. Our goal is quite simple - to create a comprehensive guide to salons and spas based on collective consumer reviews and ratings.

CITY BEAUTY GUIDE will solve the problem of "too much choice," "best value for money," "how do I know it's really good?" and "don't know where to go" a little like your favorite restaurant guide.

While magazines continue to be a great resource for expert editorial opinion and what's "hot," nothing beats real life recommendations from women who have experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly. In the world of beauty and grooming, peer opinion is King (or Queen, as the case may be!).

Before the CITY BEAUTY GUIDE website and book come to life, we need to capture thousands of consumer reviews. We ask you to take this brief online survey and share your opinions of the various salons and spa services that you visit.

Looking and feeling good isn't just our passion, now it's our business. CITY BEAUTY GUIDE will fast become your "go-to" guide to beauty and grooming spots from coast-to-coast, starting with New York City.

So go ahead, in the name of beauty, click here: www.citybeautyguide.com and share your point of view!

The CITYBEAUTYGUIDE Team

P.S.Please forward this email to your friends, family and associates and ask them to participate.

unique opp to get your work seen in NYC

GO LIGHT PRODUCTIONS is seeking artists who need technology and advertising space to make their digital art projects a reality in real-world spaces. Utilizing state-of-the-art digital imaging technology, advertisers have a new twist to traditional static billboards.

In simple terms, we are interested in any material that fits parameters as follows:- high contrast, bright colors- suitable for minors - we are showing in public, in the street- animated - maybe even short movies, or individual images in sequence (max.1,2 minutes)- hi-res files, to utilize the capability of the equipment- should work well without sound, silent

Work will be displayed at the corner of 72nd and B'way - a very busy corner with lots of pedestrian and auto traffic. We conceive it as a promotional event involving suitable artwork, non-profit just to illustrate the possibilities of the light projection medium and give artists an opportunityto show their work in an unconventional, yet highly effective manner. Our rental house will supply the most powerful technology available, we'll produce the event, send out invites, maybe even have a van or truck there hand out free drinks, sort of an "outdoor vernissage". Also, the technology would allow us to provide a "live-feed" from the street.

We are planning for the 3rd week of April, 3 consecutive nights, possibly longer - and we are working to get the material lined up right now.The lure of projecting powerful mega images as large as 400' by 400' ontoskyscrapers, sandy beaches, athletic fields and mountains motivated the founders Alex Vandoros and James Giddings to develop their ownstate-of-the-art mega format nighttime projection medium. By customizing the most potent projection technology available, GO LIGHT PROJECTIONS conceptualizes and executes creative mega images worldwide. With offices inNew York, Paris and Munich, GO LIGHT PROJECTIONS is capable of coordinating presentations in multiple cities simultaneously anywhere in the US or Western Europe.

Interested? Contact Alexander Vandoros at alex@gooutdoor.com.

Arts Writers Grant Program Announces New Application Process for Book Proposals
Deadline: May 5, 2008 (Letter of Inquiry)

The Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed to support writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through project-based grants issued directly to individual authors. The grant program is spearheaded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts ( http://www.warholfoundation.org/ ) as part of its broader Arts Writing Initiative and is administered by Creative Capital ( http://www.creative-capital.org/ ).

Beginning with the program's 2008 grant cycle, applicants for book projects will no longer be required to submit a letter of strong interest/intent to publish from an editor as part of their proposal. In place of this requirement, the program is implementing a new Letter of Inquiry phase for all book proposals, which will serve as a gateway to the formal grant application process. The addition of the LOI phase and the elimination of the letter of strong interest/intent to publish will enable the Arts Writers Grant Program to process a higher volume of book proposals and to consider book projects at an earlier stage of their development.

LOIs will only be accepted from writers who meet the program's general eligibility requirements and who have been writing professionally on the contemporary visual arts on a regular basis for at least three years; or have previously published a book with a reputable publisher; or have completed a Ph.D. dissertation. There is no LOI phase for writers seeking support in other categories (articles, short-form writing, and blogs/new and alternative media). Those writers may apply directly to the program during the general application phase. (For these projects, the online grant application form opens on August 4, 2008. Grant applications are due September 22, 2008.)

Dance/USA Announces Continued Funding for American Masterpieces: Dance - College Component
Deadline: May 19, 2008

Dance/USA ( http://www.danceusa.org/ ) has announced renewed funding for American Masterpieces: Dance - College Component through the support of the National Endowment for the Arts ( http://www.nea.gov/ ). The AMDCC brings classic American dances of the past century to college students and audiences in communities across the United States. The NEA and Dance/USA welcome projects that embrace choreography from all forms and styles representing the cultural richness of the U.S. and its many dance traditions. Awards are available to reconstruct or restage works by master American choreographers of the twentieth century.

These works will increase students' access to and understanding of dance heritage and the role played by artists such as George Balanchine, Bob Fosse, Martha Graham, Susan Marshall, Meredith Monk, Jerome Robbins, and other artists. For all projects, public involvement within and/or beyond the academic community is critical. At each site, performances, panel discussions, lectures, school showings, open rehearsals, film or video showings, symposia or other activities should allow general audiences access to the history of the dance work and the process of creating choreography.

Other organizations may collaborate, including musical ensembles, dance companies, community-based dance organizations, presenting institutions, or elementary and high schools. It is permissible for several colleges to collaborate on one project. Awards will be made in the amount of $10,000 each.

The National Endowment for the Arts ( http://www.nea.gov/ ) has announced a design competition, in partnership with the Joint Committee on the Library and the Office of the Architect of the Capitol ( http://aoc.gov/ ), for a statue of civil rights pio- neer Rosa Parks. Commissioned by the U.S. Congress, the sculp- ture will be permanently installed in National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol Building. Interested artists should submit an application, including a proposal for the sculpture and work samples that demonstrate their ability to cast large-scale bronze sculptures and to work in the portrait mode.

Rockefeller Foundation Announces New York City Cultural Innovation Fund 2008 Competition
Deadline: April 4, 2008

The Rockefeller Foundation ( http://www.rockfound.org/ ) has announced the start of this year's New York City Cultural Innovation Fund competition. In 2007, its inaugural year, the fund awarded $2.6 million through sixteen two-year grants of $50,000 to $250,000 each for groundbreaking initiatives that enrich the city's cultural life, helping to ensure the continued economic strength and diversity of the city's creative sector.

Projects selected by the fund fall into one or more of the following categories: 1) programming and premieres of new artistic works that demonstrate innovation and can activate new directions in the artistic breadth and depth of institutions in the visual, performing, and media arts; 2) creative engagement with the issues shaping New York City's future cultural and civic agenda; 3) partnerships that bring cultural and community-based institutions together with universities and the private sector; and 4) interventions designed to confront longstanding bottle- necks and limitations to the expansion of cultural vitality with fresh approaches and solutions.

To qualify, organizations must be based in one of the five boroughs of New York City. Applications -- which must encompass innovative approaches -- should be submitted online through the Rockefeller Foundation's Web site by April 4, 2008. Shortly thereafter, applicants will learn whether or not they will be invited to submit full pro- posals, which will be due at a date to be announced in the summer. 2) CREATE an online theater in which visitors can watch and direct performances from multiple perspectives including back stage views, and performers' point of view via body mounted cameras.

3) DEVELOP tools to request and display the geography of artist's online audiences. Venues in new cities can then have ready-made audience bases.

We hope these online tools will help transform artist's websites into sites of participation. We anticipate this will create great impact in the arts world!

grant for native american artists

National Museum of the American Indian Accepting Applications Visual and Expressive Arts Grants
Deadline: January 15, 2008

The National Museum of the American Indian ( http://nmai.si.edu/ ) Visual and Expressive Arts Grants program offers support to a wide range of arts activities with the goal of increasing the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary Native American arts. NMAI considers the recognition of living artists of the Western Hemisphere to be of primary importance and will direct support to projects that strengthen the scholarship in this underserved field and create opportunities for new and innovative work.

Applications are accepted in two program areas:

1) The Visual Arts Program provides funding in two areas: Ex- hibitions and Installations -- funding of exhibitions and/or installations (including installation art) of contemporary Native American art in the United States at not-for-profit venues; and Publications and Critical Writing -- funding of publications on contemporary Native art, including, but not limited to, exhibition catalogs, special editions of journals, etc. At least 50 percent of the proposed project artists/au- thors/curators must be Native American.

The amount of each award will be $7,500 to $15,000 per project. Grants will be awarded to nonprofit or education-based organizations such as community art centers, artist-run galleries, museums, arts organizations, and college or university galleries or museums.

2) The Expressive Arts Program provides funding to promote the creation and presentation of new works (or existing but never- before-performed works) by Native artists, with particular empha- sis on collaboration. Applications from two or more artists who wish to collaborate are strongly encouraged. Artists may create presentations that include (but are not limited to) music, dance, spoken word, electronic media, film/video, costume design, mask making, set design, performance art, photography, painting, and other forms of expressive culture.

Grants of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to selected artists. This call is open to all indigenous peoples who hold American citizenship. Tribal affili- ations are not required for non-Native collaborators, although the primary applying artist must be Native.

Complete program information is available at the NMAI Web site. RFP Link: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10009978/nmai

Dear friends,

Here is a link to a podcast interview with me about The Star Islanders and serial blog fiction by community media advocate JD Lasica for his Real People Network site. JD interviewed me during February's We Media Conference in Miami, amidst a backdrop of palm trees and parrot calls. (You don't need an iPod to view the video.)
