Submissions invited for the Claire Donaldson 8 in 48 Short Play Festival
Augustana College (SD) and The Great Plains Dramatist Exchange seek submissions for the Claire Donaldson 8 in 48 Short Play Festival. Submissions are accepted from January 15, 2010 to May 15, 2010. Eight ten-minute plays will be selected by a national panel of selectors; winners are notified by June 15, 2010. A scholarship and cash prizes are offered. This festival is founded in honor of the late Claire M. Donaldson. Ms. Donaldson was a 2000 Augustana College graduate passionate about the art of playwriting.
Julia Bennett, Augustana Theatre Faculty and Co-Producer, says, "The 8 in 48 is an outstanding opportunity for us to honor Claire while supporting the development of new short plays. Producing eight plays in forty-eight hours is a challenging and exciting artistic event. Our community loves to see the new works and our students mark it as a highlight in their college careers." Heidi Sue Meyer, Festival Coordinator and Augustana College Alumna, adds, "As a playwright, I was eager to create a supportive environment for young playwrights in our state. The Festival continues to offer that possibility."
All submissions must be previously unproduced, 10 minutes or less in length, and can focus on any topic or genre. No more than two submissions per playwright, please. Submissions by electronic attachment are encouraged. Winning selections will be mounted during the 8 in 48 Festival on September 18, 2010 at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A call for Festival directors, designers, and actors will go out March 1, 2010. Augustana's community and alumni are strongly encouraged to participate. All interested individuals are invited to bring their talents to this unique opportunity. For more information regarding the Festival, contact Julia Bennett at julia.bennett@augie.edu

Charleston High grad, Susan Johnston, was honored last April in front of an overflow crowd of 700 raucous theatergoers, creators and fans at the 30th annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards. Miss Johnston was recognized for her play, “How Cissy Grew”, which had its world premiere run at The El Portal Forum Theatre from October to November 2008 starring James Denton of Desperate Housewives, Erin J. O’Brien, Liz Vital and Stewart Calhoun who was also nominated by LA Weekly for Best Supporting Male Performance for his role as “The Guy”. All of these actors, as well as the original director and Ms. Johnston will be here for a staged reading of the play.
“How Cissy Grew” tracks the implosion of a West Virginia family over the twenty years following their baby’s mysterious and brief abduction. Best known for her plays, Old Woman Flying and One Girl Drummer, Miss Johnston’s work has been produced and/or read at Mill Mountain, City Lights Youth Theatre, The Jungle, Centenary Stage, The O’Neill, The Peter Norton Space, The Lark, The Echo, Manhattan Theatre Space, NADA, La MaMa, Provincetown Playhouse, etc. She is a six-time published playwright who completed her MFA in Dramatic Writing at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has received a number of grants and fellowships, including a Jerome and a nomination for a Fulbright. She has worked as a film industry reporter for Interview magazine and an interstitial writer for A&E’s Biography series. Her first novel, Party Favors, is on shelves now. In May, Miss Johnston was honored by NYU with a Meritorious Alumni Service Award for her work helping to establish alumni programs on both the West and East coasts.
The play was critically hailed from the offset. The LA Times called the play “absorbing” and said, “Johnston’s monologues for the guilt-stricken Butch, beautifully underplayed by Denton, are the show’s highlights.” Daily Variety said, “Susan Johnston examines the jagged shards of a dysfunctional family's sorrowful history, offering compelling glimpses into the aftermath of a horrific event.”

FestivALL in Charleston, WV
Dear Artisan,
Charleston Mayor Danny Jones and Executive Director Larry Groce invite you to apply for the fifth annual FestivALL Capitol Street Art Fair. The Fair will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2009, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 28, 2009, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
FestivALL will take place for a total of ten days, beginning on June 19, 2009. Events will include the Smoke on the Water Chili Cook-off, the Mayor’s Concert, the Fund for the Arts’ Blues, Brews & BBQ and Wine & All That Jazz, Mountain Stage, and performances involving theater, music, and dance, plus other visual arts and special events.
There will be local and regional marketing of FestivALL and events listings via website, rack cards, posters, fliers, billboards, print ads, radio and television commercials, and other promotions. This year the artisans who are juried into the Art Fair in March will be included in the printed schedules.
For the 2009 Art Fair all artisans are required to go through a formal jurying process in order to maintain a high level of quality and achieve a balanced mix of media for the Fair. The necessary information is enclosed with this letter. We welcome applications from artisans from across West Virginia and outside of the state, including emerging artisans.
Artisan evaluations of the 2008 Fair provided both positive feedback and suggestions for improvements. Based on these evaluations a number of changes are being made for 2009. These include:
• We have contracted with one supplier for all tents.
• The basic booth space is being increased from 8’ to 10’. Tents are being moved further away from the stages and fewer tents will be used between Lee and Washington Streets. All cars will be kept from parking on this block.
• A limited number of individual 10’ x 10’ tents will be made available, if possible, adjacent to Capitol Street.
• The number of demonstrators for children is being expanded to four on each of the two blocks.
• There will be overhead lights in each of the long tents. Individual electricity will continue to be provided wherever possible.
• Security will be enhanced, but all artisans who leave goods overnight do so at their own risk. Fair hours are being adjusted to allow artisans to remove their goods Saturday night and bring them back Sunday morning.
• Artisans will be limited to a total of two spaces (20’ frontage).
• Application fees have been raised due to increased costs per space. Note that FestivALL does not take a commission on sales.
Allied Artists and Tamarack continue to be partners in the production of the Art Fair and each have identified tents for artisans juried into their organizations. Allied Artists and Tamarack artisans will be juried for the Art Fair through the same process as all other applicants.
Ron DeWitt, Tamarack Artisan Services Director, is serving as the Chair of the Selections Committee, and all applications will be sent directly to him. The Committee includes two representatives each from Allied Artists, Tamarack, and unaffiliated artists. I also sit on this Committee. None of the Committee members will be exhibiting at the Fair.
We encourage you to apply by the early deadline in order to benefit from the reduced fees. All applications will be juried at the same time, on March 12 and 13, 2009. All checks will be held uncashed until after the jurying process. If your application is not accepted then your check will be returned. Notifications will be mailed out by April 3, 2009.
If you are interested in participating in this Fair, please submit the application form, a check for the appropriate fee, and five photos or a CD with five images for each separate medium. Please use postal tracking in sending your application and keep a copy of your verification of delivery.
This letter and the application and background materials are posted on the FestivALL web site, www.festivallcharleston.com, This packet is also available by email or postal mail upon request. The web site will also have information about the other events for the 2009 FestivALL as updates become available.

NEW YORK— After another successful summer, the Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) returns for its seventh season to accept new works from playwrights. Although the dates of the festival are yet to be determined, this annual event will showcase a two-week celebration of urban theatrical expression by a cross-section of emerging playwrights whose work is underrepresented in American Theatre in NYC. For the past three years, the legendary Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village, has been the venue of choice to host the festival, however, for DUTF 2009, the staff will be considering other venues. Below are submission details.
For DUTF 2009, the staff will accept 12 theatrical works; six full-length productions (60-90 minutes) and six shorts (30-45 minutes). Each work is performed only once during the festival. Three of the outstanding works produced during the festival will receive $1,000 in cash in the following categories of Best Play, Best Short and Audience Awards.
Please forward all materials to Marie Denise Jean-Louis, mjeanlouis@arcos-ny.com by 5pm on Friday, December 19, 2008 or via mail at Downtown Urban Theater Festival, C/O Arcos Communications, 341 West 38th Street, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10018.

DEATH TO THE TINMAN written and directed by Ray Tintori
***Short. How the tinman lost his heart. Shot in black and white, great story, funky and fun take on the Oz mythology, a joy to watch both for its cinematography and its performances. You'll actually laugh and cry - really!
WONDERS ARE MANY directed by Jon Else
***Feature doc. Behind the scenes of the Peter Sellars directed, John Adams composed opera "Dr. Atomic" - an in depth look at Oppenheimer but also, for those of us in the arts, a chance to see Sellars in rehearsal and to better understand how a composer and a director collaborate.
SAVE ME directed by Robert Cary written by Craig Chester, Alan Hines, Robert Desiderio
***Feature drama. A drug addicted cutie (Chad Allen) gets shipped off to Genesis House, a Christian home for gay men who want to "cure their sexual broken-ness", where, of course, he falls in love with the equally hunky Robert Gant. What could have been a stereotypical nightmare of a film is actually quite moving and Judith Light reinvents herself. Worth seeing.
