Finishing Funds for Docs

The International Documentary Association's Pare Lorentz Film Finishing Award will provide $25,000 to one deserving film project in need of financial assistance for completion. In keeping with the nature of Pare Lorentz's films—a successful candidate for the Pare Lorentz Film Finishing Fund award will demonstrate one or more of Lorentz's central concerns—the appropriate use of the natural environment, justice for all and the illumination of pressing social problems—presented as a compelling story by skillful film-making. Past projects submitted have a broad range of subject matter. A committee of documentary industry professionals will choose the winning selection.

Documentary projects meeting these areas of interest and concern are encouraged to apply for this $25,000 finishing fund award. Preference will be given to projects that have a strategic plan for and reasonable chance of securing public distribution in the following arenas: theatrical release, broadcast or cable television, or educational/ancillary distribution (to schools, museums, or other institutions).

To apply for the Pare Lorentz Film Finishing Award, please use the online submission process at Withoutabox.com. Read about eligibility requirements, timeline, FAQs, and more.

oh my goodness gracious!

On Monday night, among a standing-room only crowd, I won LA Weekly’s 30th Annual Theatre Award for Playwriting!!!!!

The crazy thing is they forgot to say my name during the list of the nominees so when they said I was the winner, I thought they were just announcing me as a nominee so I didn't get up!!! Everyone was jumping up and down and screaming at me to go up to the stage!!!! I was so confused. And then the spotlight hit me and I completely freaked out.
See photo above of me completely freaking out - enjoy!

I truly have no idea what I said in front of that microphone so let me say it now –

Thanks to Casey Stangl and John Spokes, Jamie Denton and Erin J. O’Brien and Victor Williams for believing in HOW CISSY GREW and making the production happen. Thanks to Jamie, Erin, Liz Vital and Stewart Calhoun (YOU WERE ROBBED!!!) for bringing the characters to life. Thanks to every member of our crew and marketing team who built and sold an absolutely gorgeous production that rivaled any regional!!!

Thanks to The MacDowell, The Echo Theatre, The NYU Grad Actors Collective, NYU Writer’s Lab West, The Tisch West Alumni Council, The Wednesday Ladies, SeaGlass Theatre, The El Portal, C. Josephine Hagerty, Nick Mills, Betsy Reisz, Ned Menoyo, Megan McNulty, Michael Goldenberg, Julia Cho, David Rock, Maura Teitelbaum and Abrams Artists Agency.

30th Annual LA Weekly Theatre Awards

The 30th Annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards
Actors and chickens and bears, oh, my!

Dancing girls and impersonators joined co-hosts Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith to transform the El Rey Theatre into the stage of Las Vegas’ Sahara Hotel, 1958, for the 30th annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards on Monday night. Reprising their roles as lounge crooners Louis Prima and Keely Smith in their hit show Louis & Keely: Live at the Sahara (now at the Geffen Playhouse), Broder and Smith were supported by their production’s six-piece jazz band and a gallery of supporting players from Sacred Fools Theater Company. That show walked away with the Musical of the Year Award in a very tight vote with some very heady competition from Joe’s Garage at Open Fist Theatre Company and Lovelace: A Rock Opera at the Hayworth. For much of the evening, the raucous, overflow crowd of 700 treated the excellent production, nicely paced by director Jeremy Aldridge, as a backdrop to their drinking and socializing.

From the stage, Queen of the Angels recipient Frédérique Michel repeatedly told the revelers to shut up. The only performer who could command some silence was Gwendolyn the chicken, who appeared contentedly on the arm of Center Theatre Group artistic director Michael Ritchie, as he gave a mock, somber homage to our hard times, adding that he always wanted to appear onstage with his pecker in his hand.

(Gwendolyn had been eating birdseed for a solid hour before her performance, and Ritchie was hoping that she would complement his performance by unloading during the act, but the bird was too well brought-up for such low comedy.)

Adding to the Dada were the artistic directors of the Colony Theatre and Geffen Playhouse, Barbara Beckley and Gil Cates, who performed a duet of “Under My Skin,” to which the Los Angeles Stage Alliance’s executive director Terence McFarland performed a spirited interpretive dance.

County Supervisor Zev Yaraslovksy’s keynote address acknowledged that the smaller theaters (the purview of the Weekly’s Theater Awards) are where the future of the theater lies, and Career Achievement recipient Dakin Matthews appeared digitally from Singapore, where he’s performing with an international company, directed by Sam Mendes. (Matthews’ fellow cast members Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack, Ethan Hawke, Roger Bean, Paul Jesson, Richard Easton, and Rebecca Hall also sent their greetings to L.A. from Southeast Asia.) Matthews closed his video with a nod to Shakespeare’s most famous stage direction — “Exit, pursued by a bear” _ for Antigonus, whom Matthews is currently playing in The Winter’s Tale. As Matthews spoke, a large bear head entered the scene.

AND THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2009 L.A. WEEKLY THEATER AWARDS ARE ...

DOWNTOWN URBAN THEATER FESTIVAL IS NOW ACCEPTING NEW WORKS

NEW YORK— After another successful summer, the Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) returns for its seventh season to accept new works from playwrights. Although the dates of the festival are yet to be determined, this annual event will showcase a two-week celebration of urban theatrical expression by a cross-section of emerging playwrights whose work is underrepresented in American Theatre in NYC. For the past three years, the legendary Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village, has been the venue of choice to host the festival, however, for DUTF 2009, the staff will be considering other venues. Below are submission details.

For DUTF 2009, the staff will accept 12 theatrical works; six full-length productions (60-90 minutes) and six shorts (30-45 minutes). Each work is performed only once during the festival. Three of the outstanding works produced during the festival will receive $1,000 in cash in the following categories of Best Play, Best Short and Audience Awards.

Please forward all materials to Marie Denise Jean-Louis, mjeanlouis@arcos-ny.com by 5pm on Friday, December 19, 2008 or via mail at Downtown Urban Theater Festival, C/O Arcos Communications, 341 West 38th Street, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10018.

Must include the following:
Biography with contact information of the playwright’s name, address, telephone number and email address, and photo
Synopsis of theatrical work
Complete script of theatrical work
Biographies of actors, director, and crew, if available
Description of stage set (if any) and production needs (i.e. sound and lighting)

About DUTF
Downtown Urban Theater Festival (DUTF) has been recognized as one of the world’s best festivals for new works and described as “not only prestigious, but a slice of heaven for playwrights who want the chance to freely express themselves.” (Theater Festivals, 2005) From an inclusive, multicultural perspective, DUTF presents works that echo the true spirit of urban life and speak to a whole new generation whose lives defy categorizing along conventional lines. It has been a catalyst and an outlet for some of NYC’s most vibrant and creative playwrights and has presented 64 original theatricalworks for more than 7,000 urban theatre-goers.

LA Times article about How Cissy Grew

It seemed as if most of the neighborhood came out Saturday night for the opening of “How Cissy Grew” at the El Portal Forum Theatre in North Hollywood. Well, Wisteria Lane neighbors, anyway.

That’s because Susan Johnston’s new play about a child kidnapping and its aftermath features James Denton, who plays Joe the plumber — er, I mean Mike the plumber — on “Desperate Housewives.”

Among those on hand to cheer on Denton and cast were Teri Hatcher (please, Teri, eat something), Felicity Huffman (wearing specs and barely noticed in the back of the theater), Doug Savant (Tom on the show) and wife Laura Leighton, Marc Cherry (“Desperate Housewives” creator), Brenda Strong (the mostly unseen “Housewife”), Neal McDonough (this season's new guy), Shawn Pyform (who plays Bree’s kid), as well as William Fichtner (looking way hot — and not nearly as scary as the characters he plays), Carol Lawrence, “Uncle Frank” from the Jimmy Kimmel show and others.

The production is in the small space at the El Portal, so fans of Denton can see him up close — really close. Just know, however, that his wife, Erin J. O’Brien, also stars in this play. So even though Denton will be close enough to touch, you probably should keep your hands to yourself.

Family of Mann

From our friend Tracey Rooney:

I'm in a new play! It's Theresa Rebeck’s The Family of Mann and I play the lead- Belinda- the newest writer on sitcom spinoff of Family Ties in 1994 (yes, it’s autobiographical and based on her first job working for Family Ties showrunner Gary David Goldberg)

They’re doing 1/2 price tickets all next weekend- for reservations or more information, call (323) 769-5858 or go to http://www.theatreneo.com/

The Family of Mann, Theresa Rebeck’s biting comedy, looks at how a sitcom is made… and what gets destroyed in the process. Rebeck, a veteran TV writer (NYPD Blue, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Brooklyn Bridge, Dream On), spins a painfully hilarious story about TV, artistic integrity, power, and the longing for connection in the workplace.

When Bruce Lee was born, his mother gave him a girl’s name to disguise him from evil spirits. When actor/performing artist Soomi Kim learned this surprising fact, she felt destined to create a theatre performance inhabiting the incomparable martial arts superstar. Set in the inner landscape of Bruce Lee’s mind the moment he died in 1973, Lee/gendary is a theatrical deconstruction of an icon; a spiritual and psychological examination of Lee’s life from birth to death. This unique gender-bending theatre performance fluidly integrates text, live original music, video and an explosive hybrid of martial arts and dance.

LEE/GENDARY was first presented at HERE’s The American Living Room Festival 2006 as a work-in-progress, directed by David Perry with fight choreography by Rafael Kayanan (The Hunted and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind).

In December 2006, LEE/GENDARY was accepted as one of the few projects by an individual artist to represent NYC in The First National Asian American Theater Festival held in New York City which ran June 11 - 24, 2007. LEE/GENDARY enjoyed a successful run at The Samuel Becket theater on Theatre Row, June 19th-21st. The last show was sold out and received a rave review from nytheatre.com:

"Then, there is Kim, who is outstanding as Lee. Hers is a convincing performance of rigorous physicality and impressive commitment. She scores big points in the case for non-traditional gender casting by showing that the key to such successes lies in having the right attitude. Oh boy, does she have the attitude! As Lee himself says early in the play, "Champions are made from something inside them." Kim's performance proves that." - Michael Criscuolo, nytheatre.com

Under the artistic leadership of Kristin Marting, HERE has served 11,000 emerging to mid-career artists developing work that does not fit a conventional programming agenda. The executive leadership of HERE is now shared with Producing Director Kim Whitener, who recently joined HERE after 12 years of working in the downtown theater producing scene. Work presented at HERE has garnered 10 OBIE awards, an OBIE grant for artistic achievement, three Drama Desk nominations, two Berrilla Kerr Awards, two NY Innovative Theatre Awards, an Edwin Booth Award and a Pulitzer Prize nomination. HERE was awarded a $500,000 federal grant by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, a $500,000 grant from the September 11th Fund, and a $600,000 capital grant from the City of New York. Co-Founder and Artistic Director Kristin Marting was honored with a 2005 BAX10 Award for Arts Managers. HERE is proud to support artists at all stages in their careers through full productions, artist residency programs, festivals and subsidized performance and rehearsal space. Work at HERE is curated based on the strength and uniqueness of the artist’s vision. In 2005, with the support of FJC, a foundation of donor advised funds, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the City of New York, HERE purchased its long-time home as part of a five-year “Secure HERE’s Future” campaign.

SPACE NEEDED FOR FUNDRAISER FOR 3 OF OUR LADIES!

In preparation for our performances in Edinburgh, and in order to raise some funds to help us with the trip, Esther, Lucia and I are planning to do a one-night fundraiser! We'll each be performing a section of our solo show and there will be a reception afterward with performance.

We are looking for a space. We'd like a space with 80-100 seats, that is available one night during the last week of July (roughly 24th - 31st), or possibly beginning of August. We're hoping it will have a theatre space as well as a space for a reception. If you know of any spaces, would you pass the information along to us? We'd really appreciate it! Feel free to contact any of us!

Esther- contact@estherchae.com
Lucia - lucestella@mindspring.com
Beth - eamato@mac.com

We also hope you'll be able to come out and support us and send us on our way!

Thanks so much!
Beth
