CEI Pilot Program Call for Applications
Los Angeles - The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) launched the second round of its Cultural Exchange International (CEI) Pilot Program and released the second set of guidelines for new applicants. CEI is a two-year fellowship program intended to enhance Los Angeles as a national and international center for the arts and foster cultural understandings through the expansion of networks and the exchange of knowledge between creative professionals.
CEI provides fellowship support to creative professionals (artists, arts administrators, arts/cultural educators and scholars, curators, presenters, creative entrepreneurs, cultural innovators, and cultural experts) traveling abroad for intensive residencies
(two weeks to three months), or creative professionals coming to Los Angeles for intensive residencies (also two weeks to three months), who have planned collaborative relationships with Los Angeles organizations to host their residencies. The program has been designed to support individual professionals or small groups (with a limit of three to four people per group).
In the first round of fellowship awards, 7 creative professionals, often leading teams of artists; 1 Los Angeles for-profit company; and 4 Los Angeles non-profit organizations were recommended for support with $88,000 for fellowship projects in Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Poland, and Rwanda. All of these projects will also culminate in free public presentations in Los Angeles. An additional $12,950 is being awarded to three of these projects, which take place in Latin America, by the National Performance Network (NPN) for a total of $100,950 in funding support.
The two-year pilot program was made possible with seed funding from the City of
Los Angeles and the Durfee Foundation. The Durfee Foundation’s funding supports
Los Angeles artists traveling abroad. Funding from the National Performance Network focuses on exchanges between Los Angeles and Latin America and the Caribbean.
To date, several respected sponsor-partners have enlarged the pool of funds committed over the two-year pilot project to more than $550,000. For CEI’s second round of fellowships, partnerships have been extended to include the Foundation for International Cultural Activities (SICA) in the Netherlands, the Sacatar Foundation in Brazil, and the Trust for Mutual Understanding, which supports exchange between the United States and Russia, as well as Central and Eastern Europe.
Local creative professionals and businesses, and non-profit organizations are encouraged to find DCA’s CEI Program Grant Guidelines online at:
http://www.culturela.org/grants/CEI/CEI_Application_052109_wforms.pdf
The postmarked deadline for submission of all application materials is Friday, June 26, 2009. An informational workshop will be held at DCA’s main office at 201 North Figueroa Street, Suite 1400, Los Angeles, CA 90012, on Monday, June 8, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For more information about the CEI Pilot Program guidelines and application, please contact Joe Smoke, DCA’s Cultural Grant Program Director at:
joe.smoke@lacity.org.

30th Annual LA Weekly Theatre Awards

Actors and chickens and bears, oh, my!
Published on April 01, 2009 at 9:41pm
Dancing girls and impersonators joined co-hosts Jake Broder and Vanessa Claire Smith to transform the El Rey Theatre into the stage of Las Vegas’ Sahara Hotel, 1958, for the 30th annual L.A. Weekly Theater Awards on Monday night. Reprising their roles as lounge crooners Louis Prima and Keely Smith in their hit show Louis & Keely: Live at the Sahara (now at the Geffen Playhouse), Broder and Smith were supported by their production’s six-piece jazz band and a gallery of supporting players from Sacred Fools Theater Company. That show walked away with the Musical of the Year Award in a very tight vote with some very heady competition from Joe’s Garage at Open Fist Theatre Company and Lovelace: A Rock Opera at the Hayworth. For much of the evening, the raucous, overflow crowd of 700 treated the excellent production, nicely paced by director Jeremy Aldridge, as a backdrop to their drinking and socializing.
From the stage, Queen of the Angels recipient Frédérique Michel repeatedly told the revelers to shut up. The only performer who could command some silence was Gwendolyn the chicken, who appeared contentedly on the arm of Center Theatre Group artistic director Michael Ritchie, as he gave a mock, somber homage to our hard times, adding that he always wanted to appear onstage with his pecker in his hand.
(Gwendolyn had been eating birdseed for a solid hour before her performance, and Ritchie was hoping that she would complement his performance by unloading during the act, but the bird was too well brought-up for such low comedy.)
Adding to the Dada were the artistic directors of the Colony Theatre and Geffen Playhouse, Barbara Beckley and Gil Cates, who performed a duet of “Under My Skin,” to which the Los Angeles Stage Alliance’s executive director Terence McFarland performed a spirited interpretive dance.
County Supervisor Zev Yaraslovksy’s keynote address acknowledged that the smaller theaters (the purview of the Weekly’s Theater Awards) are where the future of the theater lies, and Career Achievement recipient Dakin Matthews appeared digitally from Singapore, where he’s performing with an international company, directed by Sam Mendes. (Matthews’ fellow cast members Simon Russell Beale, Sinead Cusack, Ethan Hawke, Roger Bean, Paul Jesson, Richard Easton, and Rebecca Hall also sent their greetings to L.A. from Southeast Asia.) Matthews closed his video with a nod to Shakespeare’s most famous stage direction — “Exit, pursued by a bear” _ for Antigonus, whom Matthews is currently playing in The Winter’s Tale. As Matthews spoke, a large bear head entered the scene.

THE PIXAR STORY
a film by Leslie IWERKS
In the mid 1980’s, three men united together to follow a dream: Ed Catmull, John Lasseter and Steve Jobs pushed beyond the boundaries of what was known in the world of art and science to form Pixar Animation Studios. In 1995, their Academy Award® winning computer animated film, Toy Story, launched an entirely new animation industry, and their ensuing films have entertained millions of people worldwide. Yet over the last twenty years, Pixar’s dramatic rise has often been one of struggle, belief and sheer commitment as they forged their way into an unknown medium. The result has been a serendipitous blend of art, science, business acumen, and extraordinary vision and talent. Through never before seen archival footage, candid interviews, and visually stunning art and animation, Oscar® and Emmy® nominated director Leslie Iwerks takes us inside the fascinating and unique world of Pixar Animation Studios.
