NYFA’s upcoming “Managing An Artistic Life” conference is focused on dancers, choreographers, and the dance community. Along with Dance/NYC, Dance Theater Workshop, Joyce SoHo, and The Field, the conference will offer practical, financial, and goal-setting advice while providing space to think critically and talk openly about what members of the dance community need to support their vision. NYFA offers a variety of professional development workshops, panels, and conferences for artists working in all disciplines. The workshops provide artists at all experience levels with professional development on a wide variety of aspects concerning their life, art work, and professional career in the arts. The Bitter Oleander publishes writing indicative of 21st century consciousness and perception. Winners of The Bitter Oleander’s poetry contest receive a $1,000 cash award and publication in the Fall 2007 issue. There is a $10 application fee. New England Writers has three upcoming awards for writers in the categories of free verse, short fiction, and nonfiction. First place winners in free verse and short fiction receive $300 and publication in the Anthology of New England Writers. The winner of the nonfiction award receives publication and $200. Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo Media Resources is an artist-run arts center supporting new media art. The Buffalo-based organization oversees two upcoming residency programs. Its Local Artist Access Residency offers equipment access residencies to media artists living in Buffalo or Erie County. Residents receive 40 hours of free access to digital editing systems and two free days of access to a full production kit. Squeaky Wheel’s Digital Filmmaker Residency awards one month of unlimited access to 16mm production and post-production systems, the G5 Final Cut Pro digital editing system, and digital video cameras. Travel costs and housing are covered by Squeaky Wheel. A $1,000 stipend is made available to all residents, who should be experimental filmmakers interested in using new technology but lacking funding to do so regularly. Terms of residency include teaching a workshop and curating a screening. To apply, visit www.squeaky.org.

Held once every three years, the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition was created by the International Trumpet Guild to honor a man that was one of the world's greatest brass teachers. The grand prize is $10,000. All trumpeters under the age of 31 are eligible to apply. There is a $50 application fee. For an application, visit www.trumpetguild.org.
