The Big Read provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. Approximately 120 organizations in communities of varying sizes across the United States will be chosen in this selection cycle to participate in the initiative from September through December 2007. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive a grant, financial support to attend a national orientation meeting, educational and promotional materials for distribution, and other materials and services.
Applicants may apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. The typical grant size will be between $10,000 and $15,000. Grants must be matched at least 1:1 with non-federal funds. Organizations applying to participate must have tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal revenue Code or be a division of state, local, or tribal government.
Eligible applicants include such organizations as literary centers, libraries, museums, colleges and universities, art centers, historical societies, arts councils, tribal governments, humanities councils, literary festivals, and arts organizations. Open Society Institute Announces Call for Proposals: Moving Walls 14 Documentary Photography Exhibition
Deadline: July 6, 2007
The Open Society Institute ( http://www.soros.org/ ) invites photographers and artists to submit a proposal and completed body of work for consideration in the Moving Walls 14 group exhibition. Moving Walls is an annual documentary photography exhibition produced by OSI, a private operating and grantmaking foundation that works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. The exhibition series is an artistic interpretation of the obstacles -- e.g., political oppression, economic instability, and racism -- that society often erects and the struggles to tear those barriers down. Since its inception in 1998, Moving Walls has featured more than seventy photographers whose work address a variety of social justice and human rights issues that coincide with OSI's mission. The Open Society Institute encourages photographers to submit documentary work of national or international subjects that coincide with the issues and geographical areas that are principally of concern to OSI.
