Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Foundation Invites Grant Proposals

The Academy Foundation, the educational and preservation wing of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ( http://oscars.org/ ), distributes through its Institutional Grants Program funding to film-related nonprofit organizations, schools, and colleges. Academy Institutional Grants are awarded only to nonprofit film organizations and to film programs within schools, colleges, uni- versities, and other institutions and nonprofit organizations.

Grants are not awarded to individuals or to for-profit companies or organizations. In 2007, the Institutional Grants Program distributed a total of $500,250 to fifty-six institutions. Typical award amounts range from $5,000 to $15,000 per institution. Please note that under this program, funds are not awarded directly to individuals engaged in the performing arts, or to cover the expenses of developing scripts, producing films, or funding educational expenses of any kind. Nor are funds awarded to film festivals. (The academy has a separate Festival Grants Program.)

American Philosophical Society Accepting Applications for Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research

The American Philosophical Society's ( http://www.amphilsoc.org/ ) Lewis and Clark Fund encourages exploratory field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation. Although applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on field studies, such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology, linguistics, and paleontology, grants will not be restricted to these fields. Grants will be available to doctoral students. Postdoctoral fellows, master's degree candidates, and undergraduates are not eligible.

The competition is open to U.S. residents wishing to carry out research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must either be based at a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the United States.

Grant amounts will depend on travel costs, but will ordinarily be in the range of several hundred dollars up to about $5,000 each. Grants are payable to the individual applicant. Budgets should be limited to travel and related expenses, including personal field equipment.

Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant Program Open to Artists in Minnesota and New York City

The Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant Program awards grants to emerging creative artists in Minnesota and New York City. Funds support periods of travel for the purpose of study, exploration, and growth. The 2008 Travel and Study Grant Program will support artists working in literature, film/video, and dance. (In 2009, artists working in music, theater, and visual arts will be eligible to apply.)

In literature, writers of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and spoken word may apply. In film, film and video directors may apply. And in dance, choreographers may apply. Minnesota-based executive and program administrators working for nonprofit arts organizations in literature, film/video, or dance are also eligible to apply due to a specific contribution for that category. Applicants must live in Minnesota or one of the five boroughs of New York City at the time of application and must have lived in that location at least one year prior to the application deadline.

Grants of up to $1,500 each will be awarded for short-term travel of three to six days. Grants of up to $5,000 each will be awarded for trips of one week or longer. The program is designed to support individuals rather than organizations. Multiple-person partnerships may apply on one application form if the monies requested do not exceed $5,000.
