Tisch West Listserve

Dear NYU Tisch Alumni:

Because our numbers have gotten so large in this last year, we've created our own Tisch West listserve. This is the best way to get information about all the Tisch West activities happening in LA. If you graduated from NYU and currently live in LA or are thinking about moving to LA – you need to get on our listserve. FROM THIS POINT ON, TISCH WEST announcements will ONLY be made via our Tisch West listserve.

For the Fall, you won't want to miss out on our NEW FROM NYU: SCREENPLAY READING SERIES and our 2 nd ANNUAL MONOLOGUE SLAM – we will be casting for actors and directors soon. We're also planning OUR FIRST EVER EMMY PARTY happening in September. And the official launch of our TISCH WEST CINEMA CLUB will happening in conjunction with THE VALLEY FILM FESTIVAL in September as well.

These are just a few of the big things we have planned for our Fall. You won't want to miss a moment. If you've been getting your information from other email lists, you need to switch over. TODAY. And make sure your friends who are NYU grads do as well.

Here's how to do it:

brooke berman writing workshop in nyc

dear writers or friends of writers:

i'm putting together a kamikaze writing workshop this august inbrooklyn. the workshop(s) will be split between exercise writing andpage-sharing. i've just done a similiar model with anne garcia romero in LA and found the mix to be quitesuccessful. while the workshop will be probably have a playwriting focus, it wlll be open to writers of other forms and accessible anduseful to poets, fiction and memoir writers, screenwriters, etc.

it's my general belief that this kind of exercise-writing can work foranyone and that the way we will discuss each other's work will be useful, as its primary goal is to encourage the writer to write more.

location: brooklyn (address to come)
dates: august 18 and 19, and again, august 25 and 26
noon to 2 sat/sun (this may turn into 1-3 if people need that extra hour in the morning!).
4 sesions total, saturdays for exercises and sundays for pages.
cost: 150 for both weekends. 100/per weekend if you just do one and a discount if you bring a second student (ie if you refer someone, andthey register for the class, you get a ten percent discount...)

rsvp.and feel free to spread the word.
no one turned away for lack of dough.

BROOKE BERMAN's work has been produced across the US (The SecondStage, Steppenwolf, The Humana Festival, The Play Company, SPF) andread and workshopped across the US and the UK (very recently atPentabus Theatre in Shropshire, UK, also, the Royal Court in London,The Royal National Theatre Studio in London, WIlliamstown TheaterFestival, Cleveland Playhouse, Naked Angels, 2 consecutive summers atThe O'Neill, The Ohio Theater, Clubbed Thumb, and others). She has been teaching playwriting and creative process workshops for nearly 10 years in both New York and Los Angeles. Her play HUNTING AND GATHERING will be produced Off Broadway at Primary Stages in early 2008.

even better news!!!!

WE SOLD THE BOOK!!!!

As many of you know, I was hired (a year ago) to create a book proposal for a currently unnamed author about the behind-the-scenes world of political fundraising. It's being presented as a fictionalized memoir.

Well, last week, we sold the book!!!

Watch this site for updates - the book will be on the shelves next summer 08 - and I'll periodically update this blog with information.

how cissy grew reading in LA

Nick Mills, C. Josephine Hagerty, Erin J. O'Brien and James Denton perform in the reading of HOW CISSY GREW at The Odyssey Theatre in LA.

The reading of HOW CISSY GREW in LA a couple of months ago has stirred up a great deal of interest in the script - which is good news on all fronts. It looks like we're shooting for production next year!

DIXON PLACE

Dixon Place is a non-profit organization founded in 1986 to provide a space for literary and performing artists to create and develop new works in front of a live audience. Our mission to support and nurture the development of new work from diverse artists and to build new audiences for the work is carried out through five main programming objectives:-- to present and encourage new and experimental work in performance art, literature, dance, and music by providing a venue for emerging and established artists to develop this new work in a safe, supportive environment-- to discover the needs and interests of artists of color by providing a venue in which cultural, personal, and societal issues may be explored and addressed -- to furnish gay and lesbian writers and performing artists with the opportunity to present their work in a supportive and non-homophobic atmosphere-- to give writers of poetry, prose, nonfiction and science fiction the chance to read and/or speak before an audience -- and to contribute to the community through periodic AIDS benefits and by making Dixon Place available as a meeting place for social change organizations. All the work at Dixon Place is selected and presented (we do not rent out the space for shows), and the artists are remunerated. Dixon Place has performances 5-7 nights a week, and performers are generally allotted one shared evening. Most of the presented work is new and developing. Dixon Place is committed to maintaining an intimate yet relaxed environment, while providing a serious laboratory for performing and literary artists. Please Note: We accept submissions only from artists based in the NYC area.Extensive guidelines and specific program descriptions at:http://dixonplace.org/html/submissions.php

To help us be more efficient in the reviewing of submissions, please read about our ongoing series on our website and submit proposals directly to the series you think is the "best fit". Keep in mind that you are sending an idea or proposal for a performance. Your proposal does not need to be a polished piece when you submit the work, and if selected, it should still be in a 'work-in-progress' stage when you perform it. Works chosen are provided an honorarium, rehearsal time, inclusion in our season brochures, website presence, and technical assistance. BREAKING INTO TV:
A Playwright’s Journey To “Cross Over” To The LA TV Biz
Guest Speaker: Susan Johnston
FREE!!!!

The TV business has changed dramatically with non-union reality programming claiming more air-time, shrinking writer’s tables and most staff writer positions open only to network fellowship writers. Add to the mix that the industry is now looking for short, “telenovella” programming for the web but doesn’t know how to hire or pay for it and the industry is turning topsy-turvy. And hey, guess what – there might be a strike in the Fall!

The old apprenticeship of moving up the rungs from staff writer to EP is a rare trajectory now. Emerging writers must learn to find the back door. Come hear Susan Johnston speak about her move to LA, playing the agency games, developing original work, the uselessness of spec scripts and how she’s worked and is still working to “cross over” from playwright to a developing EP in her three years in LA.

Wednesday, July 11th
6:30 - 8:00pm
TSOA Student Affairs
8th Floor Conference Room

Susan Johnston is a four-time published playwright whose plays have been presented at The O’Neill, The Peter Norton Space, The Lark, The Echo, The Jungle, Mill Mountain, Provincetown Playhouse, and other regionals. She has been the recipient of an NEA grant, a Jerome Fellowship and was a Fulbright nominee. She’s written for Interview Magazine, A&E’s popular Biography series and developed properties for legendary Broadway producer Marty Richards. She is currently selling a novel “Fundraiser”, selling an original TV drama “The Widows” and in development with her new play “How Cissy Grew”. She is repped by Abrams Artists (NY, legit, books) and CAA (LA, tv).
