National Endowment for the Arts Accepting Applications for Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
Deadline: June 11, 2007
The National Endowment for the Arts' ( http://www.nea.gov/ ) Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth funding program is designed to advance arts education for children and youth in school- or community-based settings. This category supports in- depth, curriculum-based arts education experiences that occur over an extended period. Projects must provide participatory learning and engage students with skilled artists, teachers, and excellent art.
All projects must include the following components: 1) the opportunity for students and their teachers to experience exemplary works of art, in live form wherever possible; 2) study of the art experienced, including the acquisition of skills for practicing the art form where appropriate; 3) the performance/ making of art within the discipline(s) studied; and 4) assess- ment of student learning according to national or state arts education standards. Learning in the Arts projects may take place in school- or community-based settings and should focus on children and youth between 5 and 18.

The program also provides practical experience through an intensive six-week internship in Hollywood and participation in the AMIA annual conference in Rochester, NY. About the Playwright
Julia Edwards studied Semiotics at Brown University and received an MFA in Playwriting from UC-San Diego. Her play THE RATS ARE GETTING BIGGER received a reading in The Public’s New Work Now festival and was produced in the NYC International Fringe Festival. She was commissioned by South Coast Repertory to write LOCKDOWN which was subsequently produced there. She has worked with LAByrinth Theatre Company (NYC), Salvage Vanguard Theater (Austin), Printer’s Devil (Seattle), Collaboration (Chicago), and The Fritz (San Diego), among others. She wrote a screenplay for Timbergrove Productions (producers of Adam Rapp’s Winter Passing). She has been developing Family Planning over the last year with the help of Echo Theatre Company and Apparition Productions in NYC.

Awards for Commissioning and Premiering Emerging California Composers

The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation ( http://foundationcenter.org/grantmaker/gerbode/ ) and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation ( http://www.hewlett.org/ ) are inviting applications to the 2007 Emerging Composers Awards Program, which supports the commission and premiere of major new musical compositions by California composers, age 35 or younger at the time of application. These works are to be com- missioned and premiered by nonprofit San Francisco Bay Area music and multi-discipline arts presenting organizations. The 2007 program will grant up to six awards of $50,000 to professionally oriented musical organizations and presenters that are based in the counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Contra Costa, San Mateo, or Santa Clara. Proposed commissions in any musical style (jazz, experimental, contemporary classical) or format (chamber, combo, orchestral, choir) will be accepted, but there must be a public premiere of the work(s) that makes it accessible to a general audience.

Deadline: June 22, 2007
The Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission awards fellowships to practicing professional artists of exceptional talent and demonstrated ability. Fellowships of $6,500 are awarded in two-year cycles: Music, Media, Literature, and Crafts Fellowships are awarded in odd numbered years (2007), while Emerging & Cross-Disciplinary, Performing, Visual, and Traditional & Folk Arts Fellowships are awarded in even-numbered years (2008).
Applicants must be a practicing artist, 18 years of age or older by the application deadline date, and a resident of Washington State. Applicants may not be a graduate or undergraduate matriculated student enrolled in any degree program.

The ASCAP Foundation ( http://www.ascapfoundation.org/ ), a publicly supported 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to supporting American music creators and encouraging their development through music education and talent development programs, funds its own programs and also provides grants to other 501(c)(3) organizations engaged in music education pro- grams for aspiring songwriters and composers. The foundation's grants average between $3,000 and $5,000 each. Grants are made on an annual one-time basis. Organizations that have already received funding from the ASCAP Foundation may apply in writing for renewed support as part of their required progress report, providing the request is for the same program and same dollar amount. If an organization that has already received funding from the foundation is requesting funding for a new program, a Letter of Inquiry is required. The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation ( http://foundationcenter.org/grantmaker/gerbode/ ) and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation ( http://www.hewlett.org/ ) are inviting applications to the 2007 Emerging Composers Awards Program, which supports the commission and premiere of major new musical compositions by California composers, age 35 or younger at the time of application. These works are to be com- missioned and premiered by nonprofit San Francisco Bay Area music and multi-discipline arts presenting organizations. The 2007 program will grant up to six awards of $50,000 to professionally oriented musical organizations and presenters that are based in the counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Contra Costa, San Mateo, or Santa Clara. Proposed commissions in any musical style (jazz, experimental, contemporary classical) or format (chamber, combo, orchestral, choir) will be accepted, but there must be a public premiere of the work(s) that makes it accessible to a general audience.

As artists, we aspire to leave the world a little more beautiful, slightly changed for the better as a result of our work. Here's a way to do that, literally:
TAKE A STEP: SWITCH TO COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS
Replacing just one frequently used conventional lightbulb at your home with a compact fluorescent bulb can save you money on your utility bill and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. If every household in the United States replaced one incandescent light bulb in their home with a compact fluorescent, it would save a total of 90 million pounds of global warming pollution over the lifetime of the bulbs. This would be equal to taking 6.3 million cars off the road. Though compact fluorescent light bulbs are more expensive than conventional light bulbs, they last 10 times longer. One bulb can lower your energy bill by $15 annually and reduce your carbon dioxide emissions by 150 lbs.

My latest film "The Hammer" -- a comedy about a down-on-his luckconstruction worker who gets a last shot at glory on the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team -- is having its festival premiere at the end of the monthat New York's Tribeca Film Festival.
My husband Kevin Hench wrote thescreenplay, and I produced, as well as co-star alongside Adam Carolla. This project reunited me with several key players from Kissing Jessica Stein including director Charlie Wurmfeld and producing partner Eden Wurmfeld.
We would love for you to celebrate the film with us by joining us atthe film's world premiere on April 26, 2007. There are two other screenings as well; please see details below.

Dance Films Association Announces Susan Braun Award Competition for Young New York City Choreographers

Dance Films Association, Inc. ( http://www.dancefilmsassn.org/ ) has announced a first-time grant opportunity for a choreographer between the ages of 16 and 25, living in one of the five boroughs of New York City, to create a short film and/or adapt a stage choreography for the camera with a young filmmaker.
The Susan Braun Award will provide cash and in-kind support from a team of mentors. Applicants must submit a VHS or DVD of any form (performance, narrative, music video, etc.) and any style (from hip hop to ballet).
The submitted choreography should represent the basic ideas to be developed further for the camera. The mentors will judge the entries on the strength of the choreography and their vision for how the choreography would be adapted for the camera. The competition requires a $15 entry fee (free to DFA members and interns).

The WORD IS BOND 3rd Annual Poetry & Performance Festival will span four days, from April 12th through April 15th at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica.
Word Is Bond brings the raw spark of SoCal’s booming grassroots spoken word poetry scene direct to Highways. DJ’s, artists, musicians, singers, dancers, and poets collaborate nightly throughout L.A. For four days during National Poetry Month, Highways will be the temporary home to these rich voices.
On Thursday, April 12th,the festival kicks-off with a double-header. The Live & Direct Art Show features the work of performance painters including Mear One, Jaha Zainabu, Azikiwe Atiba Andrews,Mark Canto, David Araquel, and Pancho Abalos. Curated by artist, poet, and community activist Alfie Ebojo (aka alfie numeric); John West will provide entertainment. The Bring It!Invitational Slam features poets Azikiwe, Blake, Gina Loring, In-Q, Katrina Recto and Taaj Freeman.DJ Jedi will spin.
Friday, April 13th: Exhale brings to light diverse female talents including Slam Champion and HBO Def Poet Sonya Renee, fierce wordstress Nikki Skies, poet, playwright and screenwriter Melinda Corazon Foley and the amazing and inimitable Ellyn Maybe.
Saturday, April 14th:: Free/Style is a showcase of performers who push the edges of spoken word with poet and DJ Brutha Gimel, dancer and spoken word artist Nicole Smith, a new collaboration between A Mic and Dim Light’s Besskepp and Bomani, and Kat Magill (aka Simply Kat), winner of last year’s Invitational Slam, who returns with her performance piece “Corner Sweet”.
After a reception by Café Bolivar with music from the Elevaters, the late show Ill Defined features performances by Steve Connell (Def Poetry, Declare Yourself), 2006 Hollywood Slam Team member Tshaka, local sensation Manuel Gallego, and Brendan Constantine.
The festival expands this year, to include a Sunday afternoon workshop and reading on April 15th.

The Fire Dept Theater Company (Jessica Blank, Erica Gould and Audrey Rosenberg, co-Artistic Directors) is still accepting submissions for its upcoming SALON SERIES. We are looking for new plays whose content addresses or intersects with a particular political issue. Plays must be previously unproduced in New York. The SALON SERIES plays will be presented in intimate, warm, non-proscenium spaces and be followed by a salon with a featured speaker whose life experience and/or expertise speaks to the issues raised by the play.
